The Breakdown:

Since I wrote my sample chapter and outline in 2018, and since I started presenting my perspective on these exercises to better manage stress, support more self-aware decision-making, and survive the tech industry, I've created over 40 CLI or tech-based lessons that I’ve now formed into a cohesive program.

The Framework

The Stress Resilience Engineering framework has four Modules, with the first three being generally available and the fourth being part of a leadership series.

  1. Compute: Installation, Initialization, Access Control, Process Management

  2. Hardware: Hardware Specs, Maintenance for Sedentary Hardware, Power Management, Patches and Breakfix

  3. State: System tuning with SIGINT, whoami, and fsck

At the conclusion of each module, you'll have experienced multiple approaches, methods, and tools and you'll have time to assess, review, and retrospect on what works for you as an individual. By the conclusion of the course, students will have journals, worksheets, and runbooks to provide quantitative and qualitative data determining which techniques were most effectively deployed and maintained.

  1. Infra [Instructor-Led Executive program only]: Network connectivity, loadbalancing, and personal narrative version control with ip, ping, haproxy, git

The Infra module provides technical leaders with additional instruction on maintaining executive presence, supporting productive and healthy teams, and managing complex workloads often requiring dependencies on other teams. It concludes with a Stress Level Agreement, a formal document that summarizes all of the lessons learned across the four modules representing a commitment to self and others on what resource allocation and stress management will look like in the future.

The Vision

As these tools expand into the community and enterprise, teams and leaders will develop a common language and terms to describe the difficulties of context switching, attention fatigue, firefighting strain, and how to manage them, creating efficient, resilient teams and colleagues.
